Social Stories for Games & Sportsmanship

Throughout their lives, children are encouraged to participate in games, sports, and other cooperative activities with their peers. These experiences help children build social skills and develop emotional skills such as patience, cooperation, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

If you’re looking for resources to help your child or student learn about these topics within the framework of games or sports, check out our customizable social stories.

These stories cover topics such as:

  • How to learn from losing
  • How to follow the rules of a game
  • How to play various games with friends while demonstrating good sportsmanship.

The stories can be tailored to fit your child or student’s unique situation. Be sure to review the social story with them several times before they engage in the play activity to set expectations for appropriate behaviors.

The special education resources on games and sportsmanship were authored by Watson Institute’s special education consultants and faculty.

These behavior stories may benefit your students.  They can be downloaded, saved and edited to suit your needs.  The * notation indicates the story is  formatted in a Power Point presentation and the ** notation indicates a Power Point with sound narration.  Each Power Point has animation included on each slide.  Some occur automatically – some occur on a “click”.  Feel free to send comments or questions to [email protected].
