Social Stories to Prepare for Employment

As students with disabilities approach the age at which they will graduate from school and enter adulthood, it’s natural for them to have questions about employment or seek guidance about workplace behavior.

You can start early and prepare your students for the various scenarios they may encounter and set expectations for appropriate workplace behavior using social stories. These stories can be fully customized to address the specific challenges your students may experience as they seek employment after graduation.

Creating a social story that outlines expected workplace behaviors can help students feel more confident and prepared for future employment opportunities.

For students with special needs, preparing for life after graduation often begins in their early teens. Your student’s school may offer Community-Based Instruction (CBI) or Vocational Experiences to help them develop job-related skills and build independence.

Introducing social stories as preparation for their CBI and vocational outings and using them as supplemental tools will help set a foundation for appropriate workplace conduct that can build their confidence and help them succeed as future employees at their place of work!

Be sure to review the social story together several times before the outing so your student has a basic understanding of what to expect and how to handle a certain situation before they experience it! You can keep the social story handy if you need to reference it at the moment.
